Edmonton police are asking residents, pedestrians and drivers to evacuate or avoid the area of Hermitage Street and Henry Avenue in the Homesteader neighborhood as a man is believed to be in the area with a bladed weapon.

Police said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that two people were seriously injured and one person was killed. The attacks are believed to be random.

Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Clarence Lawrence, a man with curly black hair and light skin who was wearing a dark sweatshirt, gray shirt, beige khakis and white shoes.
Lawrence is considered armed and dangerous, police added, and are warning anyone who encounters him to call 911 immediately.

“A heavy police presence can be expected in the area as officers search for the suspect,” police said.
Four Edmonton public schools have been placed “on alert” as a result of the incident, spokeswoman Veronica Jubinville confirmed in a statement.
“When a school is on alert, the outer doors are closed and no one is allowed to enter or leave the building, but classes continue as normal,” he said.
Students are being held inside and dismissal has been delayed at Homesteader, Belmont, Sifton and Overlanders schools.
“Families at each school were notified of the late dismissal through SchoolMessenger, our department’s emergency messaging system,” Jubinville said. “More information will be shared with families via SchoolZone later this afternoon.”
