RCMP say they responded to a call on Sept. 6 in the 1000 block of Aldon Road to investigate a breaking and entering at the home of an elderly person. It was reported by the victim that his side window was broken, various drawers had been gone through, and that there were items stolen from the residence, including jewelry and cash. The victim’s daughter sent surveillance video of the suspect to Castanet. The next day, the same suspect was spotted in the area by an off-duty police officer. The same officer was able to put the pieces together from the previous report before confronting the individual. When the suspect was unable to provide a plausible explanation for what he was doing, the off-duty RCMP member took action by contacting his on-duty colleagues. The off-duty officer waited at the scene with the suspect until officers arrived to arrest him. They handcuffed him and arrested the 37-year-old for a break and enter. “This is a prime example of neighbors taking care of neighbors. Working together as a community looking out for each other increases the feeling of safety, security and helps the police do their job,” said Const. Mike Della-Paolera. “This is the tenth arrest of priority property offenders in the last 10 days by the Kelowna RCMP Regional Detachment. Of the ten arrests, four people were detained, two were released by police for business and four were released by the courts.” The suspect is from Edmonton and has previously been convicted of more than 20 crimes in Alberta.
