A period of mourning is underway at an unprecedented time for the country. It could also have an impact on professional sports, on a busy weekend of action. There is no order to cancel sporting events and it is up to individual sports to decide whether it is appropriate to continue their programmes. England’s cricket team’s Test match against South Africa at the Oval on Friday has been called off, while EFL football matches scheduled to be played on the same day have been postponed. Here are the big sporting events taking place this weekend and how they may be affected by the Queen’s death. Football Manchester United – Real Sociedad took place on Thursday afternoon at Old Trafford. A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off and the players wore black armbands. West Ham also played FCSB in the scheduled Europa Conference League match, with players wearing armbands and a minute’s silence was observed before kick-off. Arsenal and FC Zurich observed a minute’s silence at half-time to respect the Queen’s passing, with players wearing armbands in the second half. There were nine Premier League games scheduled at the weekend, starting with the west London derby between Fulham and Chelsea at midday on Saturday, with reports suggesting clubs expected those games to be called off. Friday’s EFL games Burnley v Norwich City and Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County have been called off with a decision on the rest of the weekend’s fixtures to be announced on Friday. With the Qatar World Cup scheduled for November, there are few, if any, free windows in the season to rearrange fixtures if the Premier League is canceled this weekend. The opening weekend of the Women’s Super League was also scheduled to take place this weekend as well as Football League matches across England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also had matches to be played this weekend. There are European fixtures scheduled to take place next week, with Liverpool, Rangers, Chelsea and Manchester City hosting Champions League games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Arsenal then host a Europa League game on Thursday. Cricket England’s final Test match of the summer kicked off on Thursday against South Africa at the Oval. Friday’s game, along with all scheduled matches in the Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy, will not be played, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced. Rugby Union The opening weekend of the Premiership season was scheduled to take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Northampton have announced the postponement of their Premiership Rugby Cup clash against Saracens scheduled for Thursday evening. Formula one The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is set to go ahead as planned. Tennis The US Open men’s and women’s singles finals are set to take place in New York on Saturday and Sunday night. The tournament will pay tribute to the Queen with a minute’s silence and a photo montage ahead of the first women’s semi-final on Thursday evening. Golf The PGA Championship kicked off at Wentworth on Thursday, but play was suspended following news of the remainder of Round 1, with all facilities at the Championship Village closing with immediate effect. In addition, the DP World Tour has confirmed that play will not resume on Friday either, with course and practice facilities remaining closed. Horse racing The Queen had a passion for horse racing and while there are no major meetings scheduled this weekend, other events were planned at courses across the country. Matches at Southwell and Chelmsford were suspended immediately following the announcement by Palace on Thursday. Boxing The undisputed title fight between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall was scheduled to take place at London’s O2 arena on Saturday night. Cycling The Tour of Britain was due to be completed on the Dorset coast and Isle of Man this weekend, but Friday’s stage six in Gloucestershire, between Tewkesbury and Gloucester, will not take place, with updates to follow on stages seven and eight .
