Two juveniles were hospitalized after a possible gang-related shooting Thursday in Uvalde. The Uvalde Police Department said on Facebook that it received a call at 5:30 p.m. about a shooting at Uvalde Memorial Park at 401 E. Main Street. The two injured youths are being treated at San Antonio hospitals, the department said. Uvalde police did not provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Texas Department of Public Safety said on Twitter that it is working with local authorities to investigate the shooting and that the incident is suspected to be gang-related. Gov. Greg Abbott said in a written statement that he directed DPS to conduct patrol operations in gang hotspots, send an additional six DPS units to work around the clock and deploy special agents to target five gangs operating in Uvalde. Abbott said he is also working to coordinate an anti-gang effort with the city. “I was outraged to learn that gang violence endangered the community of Uvalde and innocent Texans tonight,” Abbott said. “Gang violence has no place here in Texas and we will bring the full force of justice to bear on these heinous criminals.” The shooting scene is just over a mile from Robb Elementary School, where an 18-year-old gunman fatally shot 19 children and two teachers in May. Anyone with information about Thursday’s shooting can contact Uvalde police at 830-278-9147 or through the department’s Facebook page. The department said calls and tips can remain anonymous.
